In their first Metro League matchup of the season, the Garfield Bulldogs faced the Ballard Beavers Friday night at Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs’, entering the game with a perfect 3-0 record, looked to continue their winning ways against a Beaver team that was coming off back-to-back wins.
Garfield coming off an impressive 58-0 win of their own looked to build off their momentum and did just that. Three minutes into the first quarter Reon Hampton scored the games’ first touchdown and from there the Bulldogs didn’t let up.
Following their first touchdown, Jacolby Cochran answered with a punt return which resulted in another touchdown for Garfield, and in the blink of an eye the Bulldogs’ led 14-0 heading into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs’ defense contained the hurry up offense from Ballard forcing four punts within the first half, an interception by Cochran, a turnover on downs, and a sack which resulted in a fumble recovery for Garfield.
Garfield led 21-0 at halftime on two rushing touchdowns, and a punt return. Upon receiving the ball to start the third quarter, the Bulldogs would score back-to-back touchdowns on a quarterback sneak from E.J. Caminong and ‘pick six’ from Raphiel Justice.
Ballard managed to score 14 points on two touchdown passes on the Bulldogs’ defense, which had only allowed a total of 10 points coming into the game.
Despite giving up the late game scores, Garfield’s defense continued to look impressive as they improved to 4-0 on the season, winning 35-14. Next Garfield will put their undefeated record to the test as they go on the road to take on Eastside Catholic.
