Eleven Influential African American Artists at College Gallery

The South Seattle Community College Art Gallery presents the “Senior Invitational” through March 16, an exhibition of the works of eleven of the Puget Sound’s most prodigious artistic talents of African American descent. The Art Gallery presents the art of Jacob Lawrence, Gwen Knight, James W. Washington, Jr., Barbara Thomas, Al Doggett, Jim Smith, Iris Franklin, Freddie Smith, Gene Rivers and Eddie Walker. Their combined works will present a surprising medley of media: serigraphs, painting, pastel, wood-carving, digital art, stone carving and quilting. These artists are central figures in the Seattle and Tacoma art community. They have collectively touched the lives of thousands of people for at least half of a century by mentoring, teaching and inspiring generations of artists. The gallery thanks Francine Seders Gallery, Ltd., of Seattle for the generous loan of artworks by Jacob Lawrence, Gwen Knight and Barbara Thomas. For more information call Esther Ervin, Art Gallery Coordinator, at 764-5337 or go to http://studentlife.southseattle.edu/art.html.
