
Elma Horton has dedicated herself to the church, community and education for over 45 years.
She founded the Mount Zion Baptist Church Feeding Ministry, which expanded from holidays to weekly nutritional meals for the sick and shut-in. In addition, she participates in the Women’s Ministry, Senior Usher Board and Women and Inspirational Choirs. The National Baptist Women’s Department named her the National Queen and a First Place plaque for her salutary money raising campaign for AIDS hospitals in Africa.
In the community her activities included 20 years as a board member of the Central Area Motivation Program (CAMP), Garfield High School Community Coalition, Chaplin of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Resource Counselor at Seattle Vocational Institute (SVI).
Several organizations have honored her for service. Washington State University established a scholarship in her honor for students of color in education (2000). United Parcel Services (UPS) gave her the Mahalia Jackson Award for Outstanding Community Service; The National Council of Negro Women awarder her and 45 other women with the Time in Her Hands plaque (2013).
Horton has a BA from Seattle University, a M.A. and teaching certificate from City University.
