First Place Scholars, Kris Bennett Broadcasting To Host Radio-Thon

first place students v2First Place Scholars (FPS), Washington State’s first charter school, recently announced that they will partner with KRIS Bennett Broadcasting (1420 KRIZ, 1560 KZIZ, and 1620 KYIZ) to host a radio-thon on Oct. 9, 10 and 11 to help raise funds for the school.

According to school officials, this effort will provide the greater Seattle community with an opportunity to support the education and well being of children living below the poverty line and children that traditional public schools are not educating with high expectations.

FPS recognizes the role the parents play in the education of their children, and through their First Place Parent Academy they help inform their parents on how they can make a difference for their children. The First Place Parent Academy gives parents what they need to be good advocates and managers of their children’s college bound education. All children should have an education that gets them to college.

“We are kicking off our Back to School Fund Raising Campaign to assure that excellent education and support services are available for young children living below the poverty line,” says FPS Board Chair Dawn Mason. “Many of our children are homeless or at risk of being homeless. No child should have to go to sleep and wake up in a car, and expect to do their best in school without support services.  It is the way that we wrap our students in services based on individual need that makes the difference each year for 100 children. “

“For almost three decades First Place has been a beacon of hope, home and education for homeless children PreK – 5th grade,” Mason continued. “We focus on a high expectation education for all of our students. This is not easy and it is very costly. It truly takes a wide and generous community to assure that First Place moves forward with the best education possible.”

According to Mason, the cost of educating a First Place Scholar is $20,000 a year.  First Place donors, grants and partnerships with the City of Seattle and United Way pay the largest portion of this cost. Individual donors are the largest source of funds.

Members of the community are encouraged to support FPS, online donations are being accepted at www.fpscholars.org or checks can be made to First Place and mailed to P.O. Box 22536, Seattle WA 98122 or dropped off at 172 20th Ave, Seattle.

First Place is a non-profit charitable organization – Federal EIN is 94-3092447.
