“Legacy of Excellence” is the theme of the April 30, 2005 Black & Gold Scholarship Dinner hosted by the distinguished men of the Zeta Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In addition to awarding of up to $5000 to African American scholars commencing or continuing their college matriculation, the men of Alpha will serenade the elegant ladies in attendance and salute the Alpha Man of the Year. The evening will conclude with Chicago Step and other dancing for the young at heart. It will be an evening to remember. Advance donations received by April 8, 2005 are $60.00 per person. After a distinguished 14-year career as Washington State Supreme Justice and its voice of conscience, Justice Smith retired in 2002 to a chorus of accolades for his service to the court and to the community. Born in Lakeland, Florida, Justice Smith graduated from Temple University in 1952 and from the University of Washington School of Law in 1955. His career includes celebrated tenures as a King County Deputy prosecuting Attorney, Special Assistant to US Attorney General Robert Kennedy, judge of the Seattle Municipal and the King County Superior Courts and Associate Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law. He is also a decorated veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Brother Justice Smith was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at Beta Nu Chapter in May 1945, making him the ranking senior member of the local chapter of the fraternity. He and Eleanor Jane Martinez, his bride of nearly 50 years, are the proud parents of four adult children and the doting grandparents of six grandchildren.
