Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney

Sun., Oct. 18 will be Pastor Emeritus Day at Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Seattle. The day will be a celebration Rev. Dr. Samuel Berry McKinney’s 57 years of dedicated and focused service to this community. His faith and focus, provided direction for the future of Mt. Zion, the community, and the people within his sphere of influence.

The community is invited to participate in this grand occasion. For 57 years, Dr. McKinney led by his zest and dedication to social justice, was the drum major for civil rights.  Nearing his 89th birthday, this man of faith has earned the respect of his church and community and it is only fitting that a man of his stature be gifted with a special day by his church and honored by both his church and community.

On this Sunday, Rev. Dr. Reginald W. Williams, Jr., Pastor of the First Baptist Church of University Park, Illinois, will be the guest preacher at two services of worship, 7:45 AM and 10:45 AM. Rev. Williams shares Dr. McKinney’s commitment and zeal for social justice issues and views Dr. McKinney as one of his civil rights heroes. Rev. Williams has received numerous honors and commendations for his commitment to people who live on life’s margins and for the cause of social justice. Rev. Williams is the co-author of To Serve This Present Age: Social Justice Ministries In the Black Church (Judson 2013), and a contributor to the book, Church on Purpose (Judson 2015).

Rev. Dr. Williams comes to us academically equipped, spiritually charged and ready to share what God has placed in his heart. After graduating from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School, Rev. Williams matriculated through the School of Business & Industry at the Florida A & M University, where he graduated, cum laude. After graduation, Rev. Williams also attended the University of Wisconsin Law School where he received several honors for his community involvement. In November 1998, Rev. Williams acknowledged and accepted God’s Call on his life to Christian ministry and enrolled at the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in the fall of 1999. He received his Master of Divinity degree, May 2002. Rev. Williams then served at Trinity United Church of Christ under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., as the Associate Pastor for Justice Ministries. In September of 2008, Rev. Williams was called to serve as pastor of the First Baptist Church of University Park, Illinois.

Rightly combined with the preached word of Rev. Reginald Williams and joyful music of the Combined Choir, directed by Mrs. Phyllis M. Byrdwell, Rev. Aaron Williams, Mount Zion’s senior pastor, has the blessed assurance that the church and community will be uplifted and enlightened with not only spiritual food, but the promise of friendly fellowship that will not be matched anywhere on this special day for the Rev. Dr. Samuel Berry McKinney.
