Free Seattle Clinic Returns to Serve Thousands Amid Growing Healthcare Gaps

As the cost of healthcare continues to rise, a major free clinic in Seattle is preparing to serve thousands of people who might otherwise go without care.

The Seattle and King County Clinic will return to Seattle Center April 23 through April 26, marking its 11th year providing free dental, vision and medical services to individuals facing barriers to accessing healthcare.

Organizers expect to serve more than 3,000 patients during the four-day event, which transforms Seattle Center facilities into a large-scale healthcare operation staffed by more than 3,000 volunteers. Seattle Center and the Seattle Center Foundation lead the effort in partnership with healthcare providers, nonprofits and community organizations.

Since its launch in 2014, the clinic has served more than 33,000 patients from over 190 zip codes, delivering an estimated $30 million in free care. Services include dental treatments such as fillings and extractions, eye exams and prescription glasses, primary and behavioral health care, immunizations and diagnostic services including lab tests, mammograms, ultrasounds and X-rays.

“Now more than ever, we are seeing people who never expected to find themselves in a position of need turning to clinics like ours for essential healthcare,” said Julia Colson, project executive for the clinic. “Rising costs, higher insurance premiums, coverage cuts and provider shortages have deepened an already fractured healthcare landscape.”

Patients who attend the clinic reflect a wide cross-section of the community, including families, seniors, veterans, immigrants, refugees and low-income residents. Organizers say the clinic is designed to be as accessible as possible, with no insurance, identification or proof of residency required to receive care.

Services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, with free admission tickets distributed each morning beginning at 5:30 a.m. at Fisher Pavilion. Interpretation services are also available to ensure patients receive culturally responsive care.

Clinic organizers note that patients cannot receive both dental and vision services on the same day but may return on another day for additional care.

For many patients, the clinic provides not only critical medical services but also a sense of dignity and support.

“I am so humbled to be able to receive care from the community,” said Riko, a past patient. “Everyone treated us with the utmost care and compassion. If there is one word to describe what I felt at the clinic, it would be ‘safe.’”
