OLYMPIA – Tourists, students and business travelers would no longer be denied life insurance when traveling to certain destinations if a measure approved today by the Senate becomes law. Senate Bill 5530, sponsored by Sen. Adam Kline, D-Seattle, prohibits life insurers from denying or refusing to insure, from refusing to renew, and from canceling or restricting life insurance based upon a person’s past or future travel destinations. “People want life insurance to protect their families,” Kline said. “Insurance companies should not be able to discriminate against people traveling to Israel or other lawful destinations.”Consumers had reported increases in premiums, or difficulty in obtaining coverage, based upon their travel. The Senate unanimously approved SB 5530; it now goes to the House of Representatives.
