The Sam Bruce Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (TAI) – The Tuskegee Airman chapter in the Pacific Northwest — recently installed three new officers. The new officers are Tommie Lamb, president; Williams Holloman (an original TAI member), first vice president; and Ernest Griffin, second vice president. Williams Booker (an original TAI member) is the immediate past president and a member of the executive team. The Tuskegee Airmen were the African American aviators – pilots, navigators, gunners, mechanics, nurses, flight instructors, and other support staff – who kept their airplanes flying during World War II. Unsung heroes for many years after the completion of their service, the Tuskegee Airmen continue to be praised for their contribution to the United States and our allies during the war. They have the distinction of never having lost a bomber under their escort, as they fought to free countries under attack in the European theater, and to prevent possible enemy attack on the U.S. Original Tuskegee Airmen in the Greater Puget Sound area include: George W. Hickman and Perry S. Thomas of Seattle; William L. Booker of Kirkland; Edward Drummond, Jr. of Lakewood; Williams H. Holloman, III of Kent; and Weldon Groves and Leroy Roberts, Jr. of Tacoma. The Sam Bruce Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. is committed to encouraging youth to succeed in education, especially in mathematics and science. Also, they endeavor to keep the accomplishments of African Americans, during and after World War II, in the forefront of the country’s consciousness. The Sam Bruce Chapter will recognize the recipients of two national scholarships and one Sam Bruce Chapter financial grant at an awards dinner scheduled for July 28th at the Southcenter Best Western Hotel. Membership in the Sam Bruce Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. is open to present and past military personnel, and others with an interest in the chapter’s programs.
