Alpha’s Award Five ScholarshipsAt Annual Black and Gold Ball The Zeta Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. recently awarded five scholarships at its annual Black and Gold Scholarship Ball. The formal affair was attended by over 260 guests, including regional members of Alpha, Executive Ron Sims, County Councilman Larry Gossett, Seattle Councilmember Richard McIver, Judge Charles V. Johnson, Ret. and other local dignitaries and public officials. The keynote speaker for the evening was Ret. Washington Supreme Court Justice Charles Z. Smith. Justice Smith spoke to the scholarship recipients about creating their own legacy for the benefit of mankind and the uplifting of our community. Aaron Spencer and DuWayne E. Andrews, Jr. received Clifford Paul (“C.P.”) Johnson scholarship awards. Spencer, the son of Harriet A. White, is a senior at Chief Sealth High School. After graduation he plans to attend Hampton University, Purdue or the University of Hawaii. Aaron plans to major in International Business and has been accepted by all three of the mentioned major universities. Andrews, the son of DuWayne and Lagilelei Andrews, is a senior at O’Dea High School, where he is student body president. After graduation DuWayne plans to attend Seattle Pacific, Seattle University or Morehouse College of Atlanta, GA. DuWayne plans to major in Theology and Political Science with a minor in Drama. In Addition, Raft T. Hollingsworth, III and Winston D. Lofton were awarded the first Herbert L. Starke scholarship awards. Hollingsworth, the son of Raft and Rhonda Hollingsworth, is a senior at Seattle Preparatory School. After graduation Raft plans to attend the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona and plans to major in Biology. Lofton, the son of Alvin Lofton and Susan Tochterman, is a senior at Sammamish High School. After graduation Winston plans to attend Stanford University and major in Political Science. The first Zeta Pi Lambda College Brother Scholarship was awarded to Alpha Xi chapter member Nicholas J. McGrue. McGrue, the son of Richard and the late Susan G. McGrue, is a junior majoring in American Ethnic Studies with a minor in African Studies at the University of Washington. Nic plans to pursue law school after graduation from UW. Each scholarship was for $1,000. The brothers of Zeta Pi Lambda chapter thank the community for its continuing and outstanding support, and congratulate all of the scholarship recipients
