(AP) _ Domininique Thompson caught two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff 92 yards in the fourth quarter to put William and Mary ahead for good Saturday as the Tribe beat Hampton 42-35 in the first-round of the Division 1-AA playoffs. Hampton (10-2, 6-1 Mideastern Athletic Conference) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 43-yard pass from Prince Shepherd to Jerome Mathis, putting the Pirates up 28-21. Following Thompson’s kickoff return, Jon Smith scored his second touchdown of the game, a 4-yard run, to seal the game for the Tribe (10-2, Atlantic 10 7-1). Prince Shepherd, who passed for 242 yards, scored on a 7-yard run with 32 seconds left to narrow the final score. William & Mary, hosting a playoff game for the first time since 1996, came into the game on a four-game winning streak, while Hampton had won six in a row. The Pirates looked like they would notch No. 7 when they jumped to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter behind Prince’s 80-touchdown pass to Mathis and a 1-yard run by Ardell Daniels. Lang Campbell, a senior from Winchester, was 23-of-37 for 294 yards, but tossed three interceptions. Elijah Brooks ran for 120 yards on 17 carries. Thompson had 118 receiving yards. Mathis returned a kickoff for 93 yards in the third quarter and finished with 188 yards on six cathes.
