The UNCF recently hosted its 20th annual UNCF Walk for Education and BBQ Cook-off at Judkins Park. As a result of the event, the UNCF raised about $30,000 to provide the vitally needed funds to help students get to and through college.

The event day commenced with the 5K Walk throughout the Central District. The day also featured a fitness challenge, to promote healthy living in our community, UNCF BBQ Cook-off for Education, where amateur grill masters competed for a brand new grill and the title of UNCF BBQ Cook-off for Education Grill Master 2013”. During the Cook-off, UNCF hosted the “Kids Happy Hour”, where free turkey dogs/sliders and school backpacks were given away to over 300 kids under the age of 18 years old.

“In today’s economy, it’s imperative that we invest in our students. Not only to invest in their education but invest in their health because a healthy body equals a healthy mind,” said Lacie West, Pacific Northwest director of the UNCF. “By supporting them now, we are giving them the education and preparation they need to become the next generation of college-educated professionals and effective community leaders.”

The fundraising goal for this event is $100,000. UNCF is still seeking help to reach its goal and is still accepting Walk donations through the end of September. To make a donation, please visit: www.uncf.org/seattlewalk.
