2017 Greater Seattle Youth Football And Cheer Championships

Peewees: Pac Highway Chargers 7, Renton Rangers 6
The Renton Rangers and the Pac Highway Chargers engaged in a hard-fought championship battle last Saturday at Highline Stadium

The Rangers’ took a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter, as running back Elijah Graves found his way to the endzone on a 10-yard run. Renton failed to convert on the point-after-attempt, which later proved to be pivotal in the outcome of the game.

Late in the second quarter, the Chargers struck back as Netza Ventura scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. The Chargers converted the extra-point-attempts and took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

The two teams took turns advancing the ball during the second half but neither team was about to score.

Renton threatened to score early in the 4th quarter, as they had the ball first and goal on the two-yard line, but Pac Highway was about to put forth a huge goal line stand and forced a turnover on downs.

With 2:19 left in the game, Renton appeared to stop Pac Highway on 4th down but a facemask penalty gave the Chargers a critical 1st down.

Hoping to get the ball back, the Ranges dug in on defense once again. However, another facemask call on a 4th down play gave the Chargers a 1st down with one minute left in the game. The Chargers ran out the clock and claimed the victory over a tough Renton Ranger team.

89ers: Renton Rangers 31, West Seattle Bengals 27
The Renton Rangers held off a spirited West Seattle Bengal squad in one of the most exciting games of the day.

Renton’s Micah Meneese scored two touchdowns as the Rangers built a 12-0 lead early in the second quarter. Renton’s Demari King showed the he is handful to tackle, as he broke loose on a 27-yard touchdown run that gave Renton a commanding 25-0 lead.

The Bengals responded as Aubrey Brown broke loose on a 45-yard run to the Renton 10-yard line that set up West Seattle’s first score o the day.

King scored another touchdown for the Rangers and they took at 31-6 lead.

In the 4th quarter, Brown threw two touchdown passes (46 and 49-yard catch and runs, respectively) as the Bengals pulled within 12 points at 31-19.

West Seattle recovered a fumble to set up a 7-yard run by Brown, as the Bengals closed the gap to 31-27 after a successful 2-point conversion.

But the Rangers showed their championship spirit as they closed out the game with a strong running attack to preserve the win.

Juniors: Kent Cobras 41, Tulalip Hawks 27
Tulalip looked as though they would give the Cobras all they could handle as they came out the gate and quickly took a 8-0 lead in the 1st quarter.

Kent’s Malik Bah responded with a 77-yard touchdown run to pull Kent within two points, 8-6. But Tulalip responded with another touchdown pass to take 14-8 lead.

Bah broke loose on a 55-yard touchdown to make the game 13-14 at the half.

The two teams exchanged scoring opportunities in the third quarter as Kent held a 28-21 lead going into the 4th quarter.

However, Bah and the Cobras took over the game in the 4th quarter as Bah scored on runs of 76 and 36 yards as Kent took a commanding 41 – 21 lead in the 4th quarter.

Tulalip scored to make the game 41-27, and had another scoring opportunity late in the game but Kent forced a fumble on their 5-yard line to preserve the win.

Seniors: Beach Boyz 20, Renton Rangers 6
This exhibition game matched the Greater Seattle 14U champion Beach Boyz against the Greater Seattle 13U Renton Rangers.

The Beach Boyz displayed their speed advantage over the young Rangers early as Donte Owens scored on a 15-yard run to give the Beach Boyz a 7-0 lead.

The Rangers, however, did not back down from the older team and struck back as quarterback De’Shaun Watkins connected with Tremaine Guidry on a 9-yard touchdown pass to pull within one point, 7-6.

Owens scored on a 65-yard run as the Beach Boyz took a 13-6 lead into half.

Owens score again on a touchdown reception in the third quarter before the game was called.

Despite being over-matched, the Rangers, who have a significant number of 12-year-olds on their team, showed their heart, toughness and desire to compete.

Final Score Beach Boyz 20, Renton Rangers 6.
