Saturday afternoon, the Franklin Quakers and Ingraham Rams opened their seasons with a back-and-forth game at the brand-new Southeast Athletic Complex, marking the first football game played at Rainier Beach High School since the completion of the new school building.
Ingraham used a strong rushing attack and a pair of fourth-quarter interceptions to pull away for a 25-14 victory. Mac Faw led the Rams on the ground with 123 yards on just eight carries, while Logan Rudell added 78 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts.
Franklin received the opening kickoff and moved the ball behind Henry Moore, but the drive stalled after a near fumble was recovered by Corde Frazier, forcing the Quakers to punt.
Ingraham quickly took advantage, using strong runs from Rudell and Faw to drive deep into Franklin territory. Keisik Pedersen capped the drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass, giving Ingraham a 7-0 lead with 6:49 remaining in the first quarter.
Franklin responded with an impressive drive of its own, once again relying on Moore’s powerful running. Corde Frazier added a 12-yard run to help move the Quakers down the field, and despite a sack by Ingraham’s Teyo Shaw, Franklin continued to push forward. Moore eventually scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7 with 3:04 remaining.
Ingraham tried to regain the lead on its next possession, highlighted by a 26-yard run from Rudell, but the Rams were forced to punt. Franklin’s Corde Frazier then provided a spark with a 46-yard punt return, setting up another Quakers scoring opportunity. Franklin moved into Ingraham territory before the first quarter came to an end with the score still tied at 7-7.
Franklin’s drive ended on downs to begin the second quarter, and Ingraham quickly marched down the field behind runs from Caden Rupp, Rudell and Faw, including a 20-yard run by Faw. The Rams drove inside the Franklin 10-yard line before Rudell capped the possession with a 1-yard touchdown run. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful after a fumble on the hold, leaving Ingraham ahead 13-7 with 8:19 remaining in the half.
Franklin answered with a scoring drive of its own. Corde Frazier broke loose for a 19-yard run, and quarterback Devion Frazier completed an 11-yard pass to help move the Quakers deep into Ingraham territory. Tyrique Galloway eventually powered into the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run, and Mor Demba Ndiaye’s extra point gave Franklin a 14-13 lead with 3:18 remaining.
Neither team was able to score again before halftime. Ingraham appeared to have another opportunity with just over a minute remaining, but James Montagner fumbled and Galloway recovered for Franklin. The Quakers moved into Ingraham territory, but the Rams’ defense stood tall, taking down Devion Frazier on third down as Franklin carried a narrow 14-13 lead into halftime.
Ingraham received the second-half kickoff but was forced to punt, giving Franklin an opportunity to extend its lead. Moore rushed for 12 yards before Corde Frazier broke loose for a 40-yard run that put the Quakers inside the Ingraham 10-yard line.
The drive, however, became a turning point in the game. An unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty pushed Franklin backward, and quarterback Devion Frazier was ejected with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. On fourth down, Ingraham blocked Franklin’s kick, keeping the Quakers from adding to their one-point lead and giving the Rams possession.
Ingraham took advantage. Pedersen connected with Montagner for 11 yards, while Rudell and Bina Wolde helped move the ball on the ground. After a Franklin sack temporarily stalled the drive, Pedersen connected with Blake Stauff for a crucial 35-yard completion on third-and-14 that moved the Rams near the goal line.
Montagner eventually finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, giving Ingraham a 19-14 lead with eight seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Rams were stopped on the two-point conversion, leaving Franklin within one score heading into the fourth.
Franklin opened the final quarter with a promising possession, but penalties repeatedly pushed the Quakers backward and eventually forced them to punt.
Ingraham quickly capitalized. After Rudell picked up yards on the ground, Faw broke loose for a 53-yard run that put the Rams deep in Franklin territory. Rupp finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Ingraham was unable to convert the two-point attempt, but the touchdown extended its lead to 25-14 with 7:04 remaining.
Franklin attempted to mount a comeback behind Corde Frazier, with an Ingraham pass-interference penalty and personal fouls helping the Quakers move deep into Rams territory. But with Franklin threatening inside the Ingraham 20-yard line, Diego Preciado intercepted Frazier to end the scoring opportunity.
Ingraham then took control of the clock, using runs from Rupp, Faw, Bina Wolde and Blake Stauff to drain time. Franklin’s defense eventually forced a turnover on downs with less than a minute remaining, but the Quakers could not generate another scoring opportunity. Ingraham’s Harem Wolde intercepted Franklin’s final pass as time expired, sealing the Rams’ 25-14 victory.
The Rams’ ground game played a major role in the win. Faw finished with 123 yards on eight carries, averaging 15.4 yards per attempt, while Rudell rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Together, Faw and Rudell accounted for 201 rushing yards.
Franklin also found success on the ground. Corde Frazier rushed for 75 yards on five carries, an average of 15 yards per attempt, while Moore finished with 73 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. The two combined for 148 rushing yards, while Galloway added Franklin’s other touchdown on the ground.
After the game, Ingraham head coach Louis Torres was proud of the way his team competed in its season opener.
“It was a very tough and very fun game against Franklin,” said Torres. “We battled back-and-forth and ended up pulling away in the fourth quarter.”
