City Of Seattle Reaches $180,000 Settlement With Dollar Tree For Alleged Labor Violations

The Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS) announced a $180,000 settlement with Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. following an investigation into alleged breaches of city labor laws. The settlement includes payments totaling $180,266 to 301 employees and an additional $6,230.88 to the City of Seattle.

The OLS charged Dollar Tree with several violations at four of its Seattle locations—including the University District, 145th Street, Aurora Avenue North, and Ranier Avenue South. Notably, the University District location closed in 2020. These alleged infractions involved non-compliance with the Paid Sick and Safe Time (PSST) Ordinance, failure to provide mandated rest and meal breaks, and not providing employees a two-week notice of their work schedules as required by the Secure Scheduling Ordinance.

Steven Marchese, Director of the OLS, highlighted the broader implications of such violations. “These findings underscore the importance of adherence to labor laws, especially for global companies like Dollar Tree operating in Seattle. Violations impact not just the workers but also their families and the overall economy,” Marchese stated.

Dollar Tree operates over 15,000 stores worldwide.
