Basketball legends Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton are reuniting — this time to inspire the next generation — at the Community in the Unity Back to School Fair on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Kent YMCA, 10828 SE 248th St. The free event for youth 18 and under will offer an afternoon of sports, music, resources, and family fun.
The centerpiece of the day is the 3-on-3 basketball showdown, Battle on the Blacktop, where Kemp and Payton will serve as celebrity coaches, bringing their trademark energy and championship mindset to the court.
“Shawn isn’t just a basketball icon — he’s a true community champion,” said Dr. Paul Stoot Sr. of Rise Up Academy. “From mentoring youth to creating opportunities for young athletes, his dedication to the next generation goes far beyond the game. He shows up for our kids in ways that leave a lasting impact.”
Kemp, a Pacific Northwest legend on and off the court, said his role now goes far beyond basketball.
“Basketball gave me a platform, but my purpose is bigger than the game,” Kemp said. “If we can give kids the tools, encouragement, and belief in themselves, we’re building more than athletes — we’re building leaders.”
Along with the basketball action, the fair will feature a flag football tournament, carnival games, bouncy houses, backpack and school supply giveaways, free haircuts, food, and music from DJ Yohiness, DJ Charma, and DJ Kutt.
The day will also bring out other sports heroes, including Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman, and additional local athletes, all united in the mission of empowering youth through mentorship, sportsmanship, and community connection.
