Do You Believe The Education Of Black Children Is A Priority In Seattle?

Deiosha Sparks…
The lack of resources and low test scores in the Black community in Seattle and cities like it do not make children of color a priority.

I would agree with that statement because growing up I’ve had plenty of opportunities here in Seattle to chase a higher education that most privileged people can’t achieve. I feel like I was equally treated as any other person that’s privileged, I feel like there was discrimination between his skin color, her skin color or any other skin color. I felt like everyone had an equal opportunity within the classroom.

Yes, I do believe Seattle is making the education of Black children a priority. Because, personally it has given me the opportunity to go to any college I want. You know pay for it, I haven’t paid a dime and I have been attending college now for three years and it’s been wonderful. They’ve been supportive whether they’re White, Black, it doesn’t really matter, they’ve been there for me since I came out of high school.

I think it is important to talk about this because I think it’s a priority. I think we need to look into things like tuition fees it’s skyrocketing, going up in an astronomical rate. If you look at most people of color these are the people that can find it very hard to be able to get scholarships or resources to pay their tuition. It’s making life very hard for people of color. I think there is much to be done in terms of providing scholarship and opportunities for people of color. I think inequality in tuition is a concern that all of us need to put our voices together to address the issue.

It is a priority. The way they treat the children in the classroom, if it’s a White kid who disrupts the class the teacher acts like they do not notice it, but if it’s a Black kid or Hispanic kid then they get thrown out of class and that’s taking them out of their learning and their time and this has happened to me and think that affects the way children of color learn.

It doesn’t matter if Seattle makes it priority, what matters is if the parents make their children’s education a priority. Everything begins in the home.  If the home preaches and practices achievement, then achievement can be attained in any environment, if not, success will come harder.  The outside influences can affect a child’s growth, but it can’t be responsible if the home is straight.
