Frank Thomas activated after long ankle rehab

CHICAGO (AP) – White Sox slugger Frank Thomas was activated from the disabled list Monday, making him available for the first time since breaking a bone in his left ankle July 6. Chicago’s designated hitter and first baseman was activated before Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels. The White Sox opened a roster spot by optioning right-hander Brandon McCarthy to Triple-A Charlotte. Thomas, who underwent offseason surgery Oct. 6 to repair a partial stress fracture in the ankle, hit just .190 in 11 games during a minor league rehabilitation assignment. But manager Ozzie Guillen said Sunday that Thomas is “healthy and ready to help this team.” The 37-year-old Thomas is a .308 career hitter with 436 homers and 1,439 RBIs in 1,925 games over 15 seasons, all with the White Sox. He led the AL with 64 walks and had 18 home runs in 74 games last year before being sidelined.
