King, who will turn 70 later this year, said she thought she was “being punked” when initially asked to be part of the magazine’s 60th Anniversary edition.

“It wasn’t something I dreamed about, but it was one of the highlights of all the things I’ve done because I never thought this would be possible,” King shared.

The big reveal came during a live on-air CBS Mornings segment, where fellow cover models Hunter McGrady and Kate Upton surprised King by handing her the iconic issue. A visibly stunned and elated King exclaimed, “Oh my God! I’m on the cover…I’m floating, I’m floating, I can’t believe it. Never in my wildest dreams!”

McGrady praised King’s appearance, stating, “Sexy isn’t an age. Sexy isn’t a size. Look how beautiful you look. That’s so inspiring to women of all ages.”

King admitted she initially didn’t see herself in that light, saying, “I just never saw myself this way. I still don’t see myself this way. But when I look at that…I go, I look damn good.”

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Editor-in-Chief MJ Day celebrated King’s trailblazing moment, noting she “gently reminds us that women are limitless and control their destinies.”

Before accepting the opportunity, King consulted her “kitchen cabinet” of family and friends, including Oprah Winfrey, who gave her full support despite admitting they have “two very different ideas of fun.”

For the shoot in Cancun, King didn’t follow any extreme diets, maintaining her regular exercise routine and enjoying a cheeseburger the day before. She credits the SI Swimsuit team, especially photographer Yu Tsai, for making her feel comfortable and confident throughout the experience.

King’s historic cover, donning a chic one-piece swimsuit and cover-up, marks a significant milestone in body positivity and redefining societal beauty standards. Her achievement is sure to inspire women of all ages to embrace their own beauty and limitless potential.
