“In recent years they have, but before, they really haven’t had as much representation during the 90s and early 2000s. But with recent changes going on now with how movies are in Hollywood, especially with recent movies like Sinners, I would say that there’s some improvement going on right now.”

“No, I don’t think so, because Ryan Coogler is nominated for Best Director this year, and I saw that if he wins, this would be the first in a large number of years, so I don’t think that they have fair participation compared to other races.”

“They recognize Black artists, yes, but they don’t give them the awards they need and deserve. For example, Sinners has 16 nominations, and I feel like they should win because I think that it is a pretty good movie. So it’s like, if they don’t win and they give it to other artists and movies that no one really sees, it’s kind of like, why?”

“I think that if you go with the term ‘fair representation,’ they do. But I think it’s not equal, and they basically do the bare minimum for Black artists. Like, ‘Oh, let’s just get those artists out there, at least we do the minimum that we can do with that.’ But there isn’t equal representation compared to as much representation as they should have for Black artists. I don’t really know a lot about, like, the Oscars, but from looking at all of the rising artists and talent in the Black community, there is not as much equal representation as there should be.”

“Absolutely not. I think that the Oscars aren’t giving Black artists enough of an opportunity, because you see a movie like Sinners that has 16 nominations, but they’re probably going to go home with about two or three awards, even though in most of those categories they definitely are the winner.”

“I would say they do in a way, because they are being represented at the Oscars, but at the same time, they don’t fully get appreciated or awarded. Many times, White or other people are winning awards over Black artists who seem like they should have been the obvious answer.”
