Last week, the Washington Huskies went on the road for the first time this year and picked up a big win in Provo, Utah over the BYU Cougars 49-19. The University of Southern California also coming off a big win over previously undefeated Utah, would set the stage for the visiting Trojans (3-1, 1-0 in conference) ranked 21stin the country to take on the 17thranked Washington Huskies (3-1, 0-1 in conference) in a huge Pac-12 conference game.
Washington was able to strike first in the opening quarter after both defenses took turns stalling the opposing offense. Freshman running back Richard Newton was able to plunge the ball into the endzone on a 1-yard run to put Washington up 7-0 after a 2:10, 35 yarrd drive that started with a 19 yard run by senior Chico McClatcher.
Three plays into USC’s ensuing drive, Washington was able to get their first take away of the ballgame. USC quarterback Matt Fink, who came into the game against Utah and had a big game last week, was picked off by UW freshman defensive back Cameron Williams, who returned it 14 yards to the USC 38 yard line. The turnover set up another short Washington drive that culminated in the Huskies’ second touchdown of the day as UW running back Salvon Ahmed fumbled the ball at the goal line, only to be recovered in the endzone by wide receiver Andre Baccellia to give Washington a 14-0 lead.
The Huskies would add a field goal to take a 17-7 lead into the half, followed by an 11-point fourth quarter, including an 89-yard touchdown run by Ahmed, as the Huskies went on to post a 28-14 victory over the Trojans.
