After quietly battling heart issues for many years, Lois W. English-Sherman transitioned peacefully to the other side on October 8, 2022. She was 86 years old.
Legally named Wilhelmina Lois (English) Sherman, Lois was born January 1, 1936, to parents Charles Allen English and Lois Eunice Berry in Middleville, Michigan. Lois was one of 7 children from their union.
Lois faced adversity early in her life having lost both parents by the age of 13. After her mother died of cancer, Lois relocated to Grand Rapids Michigan to live with relatives.
She came of age in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Married and had a son, David in 1957. In 1960, she married her late husband Alton Earl Sherman. In October of 1963, they welcomed their daughter Erika Sherman into the world.
In 1968, the Sherman family relocated to Seattle, Washington. There, Lois worked for many years in food service and early childcare education.
Lois and Alton spent their retirement years in Grand Rapids. While there, Lois spent her time visiting with her brothers and sisters– Vanessa Kelly, Harold English, Charles “Sonny” English, and Eunice Marshall (deceased), and her Aunt, Marguerite Seymour-Lewis. In her spare time, she would visit convalescent homes to feed the elderly and make beautiful quilts.
As her health declined after the death of her husband, Lois relocated to her son David’s home in Seattle, Washington.
Though her later years were marked by isolation, Lois enjoyed reading her Bible, frequenting local discount stores, and surprisingly, watching the discovery channel’s Naked and Afraid. She was affectionately known by her loved ones as “Peach or Peaches.”
Lois is survived by her sister, Vanessa Kelly, and brothers Luther Lyle and Harold English; children Erika Sherman Shackleford, son in-law Orville J. Shackleford; David Sherman, former daughter in-law Charlotte Watson Sherman; grandchildren Dr. Aisha Sherman Commeh and Zahida Sherman; son in-law, Dr. Kobina Commeh, and great-grandchildren Maya Commeh and Ella Commeh.
Cards of condolences can be sent to David Sherman at 4035 51st Ave S. Seattle, Washington 98118, or Erika Sherman-Shackleford, 1414 E. Fairbanks St. Tacoma, WA. 98404
