In Memory of Velia Renee Lockett

Velia Renee Lockett, aged 68, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023.

She was born on May 13, 1955, in Seattle, WA. Velia was known for her kindness and compassion, always putting others first. Her magnetic presence and warm energy immediately lit up any room she entered, leaving an unforgettable impression even on those who had only briefly met her.

Velia graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle, WA, and embarked on an exciting career as a singer, dancer, and entertainer that took her around the world. Her talents shone in musical theater, where she played starring roles in productions like “West Side Story,” “Guys and Dolls,” and “Purlie.” She also appeared in Ben Vereen’s “Get your Boogie Down,” which inspired her to produce, direct, and choreograph her own innovative shows in local clubs. Her career extended to Las Vegas revues, where she garnered awards for her choreography and dance in the International Hair Shows held in England and Switzerland. Known as “Star” during this phase of her career, Velia made appearances on TV shows such as Star Search and in various videos, commercials, and films, including “Tap” (1989) and “Salsa” (1988). She co-produced the award-winning TV show “D’Maurice and Armageddon” before returning to her hometown, Seattle.

In Seattle, Velia continued to showcase her talents as a dancer, writer, and performer. She choreographed the annual Miss Chinatown Beauty Pageant and had a long career in retail. She worked at Caché and, for the last 19 years, at Chico’s in Bellevue Square. Every day, she touched the lives of her colleagues and customers.
