Information, Help Needed On Heat Stroke During Heatwave

Record heat has can be a serious issue for those that are vulnerable and week. But, it can also create tragedy for those that don’t know basic information on how to avoid medical emergencies. The state of Washington is offering assistance in helping residents find a place to cool down during the heat wave. Counties, cities, and communities have set up free cooling centers in places like libraries, senior centers, and other public spaces like shopping malls. Experts say the first step to avoid heat-related illnesses is to know the signs of them coming on and what to do next.

State officials are seeing what more can be done to assit people in taking care of themselves during the heat. Officials say residents should find a cooling center near them. They can also call 2-1-1 or visit the 211 Search Washington website. The Washington State Department of Health has made it convenient.  They say that people can input their zip code and receive a list of nearby places for the family to get some relief from the heat.

The first step to avoid heat-related illnesses is to know the signs of them coming on and what to do next. Symptoms of heat stroke include:

– High body temperature (103 degrees F or higher)

– Hot, red, dry, or damp skin

– Fast, strong pulse

– Headache

– Dizziness

– Confusion

– Loss of consciousness

A person may not know they are experiencing a heat stroke. If they are, they should call 911 immediately. If you see someone having a heat stroke, move that person to a cooler place. Work to lower the person’s temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath. You should not give the person anything to drink. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

– Heavy sweating

– Cold, pale, clammy skin

– Fast, weak pulse

– Nausea or vomiting

– Muscle cramps

– Weakness or fatigue

– Dizziness

– Headache

– Fainting

Washington temperatures are in the 90s. This is expected all over the state. The state will place areas under a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning. The Pacific Northwest is no stranger to heat waves, but with many buildings not having air conditioning, local governments have offered cooling center and even air condition units. Libraries will also be open throughout the weekend in Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Bellevue, Kent, Renton and statewide.
