Oct. 16, 1947 – Dec. 27, 2025
On Oct. 16, 1947, Janis Marie Anderson was born in Seattle, Washington, as the surviving twin to Jessie and Gracie Crouch, both of whom preceded her in death. Janis grew up in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School with the Class of 1965. During high school, Janis was honored as a Rhinestone Debutante, marking the beginning of a lifelong commitment to community and personal achievement.
Following graduation, Janis attended Olympic College in Bremerton, Washington. In 1969, Janis moved to the Bay Area and began a diverse professional career. Janis held positions at Focus Cable and the County Board of Realtors and worked as a payroll accountant for the City of Oakland. Janis also balanced professional life with other interests, serving as a bartender and participating in organizations such as the Black Bar Association and an amateur bowling team.
In 1992, Janis returned to Seattle to care for ailing parents. A passion for bowling continued, and Janis joined several local leagues, becoming affectionately known as “Jayebird.” Janis worked for nearly two decades in the King County Accounting Department, where dedication and strong work ethic left a lasting impact.
In 2004, Janis joined The Original Seattle Steppers Organization. In 2006, Janis became public relations manager for Steppers Unite Inc., a role held with pride and distinction. Leadership and warm spirit earned Janis the nickname “Mother Jayebird” among Pacific Northwest Steppers groups. Janis also enjoyed line dancing, bowling and karaoke. A favorite pastime was traveling to California by Amtrak to visit grandchildren.
Janis is survived by sons De Von Anderson of Seattle and DaMeonn Ballard; granddaughters Devana’ and DaRina Ballard; great-grandson Roman, all of California; goddaughter Anna Ponder and family of Seattle; and a host of cousins and friends who cherish the memory.
