Some are feeling a little satisfaction after the man who killed Mavis Kindness Nelson and sexually violated her remains was sentenced to 34 years in prison. Mavis has received many comments about her work and dedication towards others in need. The Seattle woman helped others find housing and services in Seattle. Her killer was sentenced Friday afternoon in a King County courtroom.
Nelson disappeared back in May of 2022. The information about her body being found is gruesome. Her body dismembered, and thrown on a trail a month after she went missing. Charles Becker was named the person after detectives used DNA to connect him to her murder. Her family said she knew the killer and tried to help him.
Becker was charged with first-degree murder, unlawful imprisonment, and sexually violating the human remains of Mavis. Court documents show Becker killed her in his home and stored her corpse there. Records also show that he repeatedly sexually violated the body for over a month before mutilating her body.
Becker tossed the body onto a trail where it was discovered decomposing. The DNA of Charles was already on file. He had already been convicted of manslaughter for the death of his four-month-old son in 2016. Becker’s DNA evidence was found at the scene.
Judge Ryan sentenced Becker to 34 years in prison. He will not be released after that bid. Becker will be sent to McNeil Island for the rest of his life. This is due to the violent sexual nature of his conviction. In his guilty plea, Becker admitted to smothering Nelson and stabbing her with a knife, and that the murder was premeditated. But when offered to speak in court, he said nothing in court.
