Mary Mahoney Professional Nursing Association To Award Scholarships To Four Nursing Students

The Mary Mahoney Professional Nursing Association (MMPNO) announced that they will award nursing scholarships to four African Americans looking to pursue a career in nursing.

 According to Shirley Gilford, Chair of the MMPNO Endowment Committee, scholarships will be awarded to Tamica Grant, Moira Kapeen, Loraine Robinson and Keandra Thompson at the MMPNO annual scholarship reception to take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sun., Apr. 29 at First A.M.E. Church of Seattle.

 2014 MMPNO Scholarship Recipients:

Tamica Grant
Tamica Grant

Tamica Grant had a strong desire to become a professional nurse while helping care for her grandmother. She became a certified nursing assistant to gain skills to help her grandmother but has been determined to not become just another young single parent statistic. Tamica is enrolled in the nursing program at Seattle University and plans to become a community health nurse.

Moira Kapeen
Moira Kapeen

Moira Kapeen immigrated to the United States eleven years ago from Kenya, Africa where her mother’s death at childbirth greatly influenced her desire to become an obstetrical nurse practitioner.  Moira became a certified nursing assistant with an associate degree in nursing and is now enrolled in the Washington State University Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Loraine M. Robinson
Loraine M. Robinson

 Loraine Robinson has worked as a certified nursing assistant at Country Doctor and Carolyn Downs Community Health Center.  In recent years, Loraine had a opportunity to provide community service in El Salvador and Thailand on mission trips with her church.  Although Loraine is a single mom with three daughters, she is enrolled in the L.P.N. to R.N. nursing program at North Seattle Community College.

 

Keandra Thompson
Keandra Thompson

Keandra Thompson was in the United States Air Force Reserve and became interested in health care after completing a Medical Serviced Craftsman technical school training course.  She has many creative ideas for improving health care and has received her R.N. already and this scholarship will help her as she enrolls in the graduate nursing program at the University of Washington/Tacoma.

 

 For over 60 years MMPNO has provided financial support to students of African heritage who are perusing a career in professional nursing in order to be leaders in reducing health disparities, improve health access and promote academic excellence.
