Lakeside Girls Advances To Quarterfinals; Four Metro Teams Face Must-Win Games At Tacoma Dome

By The Seattle Medium

All five Metro League girls basketball teams that advanced from last week’s District 2 tournament remain in contention for the WIAA 3A state championship and will compete next week at the Tacoma Dome. The Metro League has been one of the strongest leagues in the state for years, and its teams have consistently been title contenders. This year is no different, as each of the five remaining teams—Lakeside, Seattle Prep, Eastside Catholic, Garfield, and Roosevelt—continue their push for a state championship.

Lakeside, the number 6 seed, secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 59-38 Round 2 victory over number 3 seed White River. The Lions will face the winner of the Round of 12 loser-out game between Eastside Catholic and Seattle Prep, two fellow Metro League teams.

Seattle Prep, the number 5 seed, which won the District 2 championship last week, was knocked into the loser-out bracket after a 54-42 loss to Stanwood in Round 2. The Panthers will now face Eastside Catholic in a Round of 12 loser-out game. Eastside Catholic, the number 12 seed, advanced to this round after defeating Bellarmine Prep 60-42 in a Round 2 loser-out matchup.

Garfield, the number 19 seed, remains in the tournament after two hard-fought victories. The Lady Bulldogs edged out Shorecrest 50-46 in an opening-round loser-out game, followed by a 50-44 win over Mountainview in Round 2. Garfield will now take on White River in a loser-out Round of 12 game on Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. The Bulldogs are the four-time defending state 3A champions, having won titles in 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2020. There was no state tournament in 2021 due to COVID.

Roosevelt, the number 15 seed, stayed alive in the tournament with a 67-56 victory over River Ridge in a Round 2 loser-out game. The Roughriders also dominated Decatur 67-23 in their opening-round matchup. Roosevelt now faces a tough challenge against number 7 seed Kennewick in another loser-out Round of 12 game on Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome.
