Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland’s legislation to strengthen life insurance protections for military families was recently signed into law.
The Fairness for Servicemembers and Their Families Act of 2025, co-led in the Senate by Senator John Cornyn of Texas, ensures that life insurance packages for servicemembers and veterans keep pace with today’s economic conditions.
Supporters say the law strengthens the financial safety net for servicemembers, veterans, and their families by ensuring life insurance benefits reflect today’s economic conditions.
“This new law makes it clear that our nation will always stand by our military families,” said Strickland.
The bill updates coverage amounts under the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI) programs, which provide vital benefits to military personnel and their families. Under the new law, insurance offerings from the Department of Veterans Affairs will better account for inflation and shifts in the cost of living.
“Our servicemembers put their lives on the line for their country and we must protect the well-being of their families in the event of a tragedy,” said Strickland.
Senator Cornyn praised the bipartisan nature of the bill and the support it received from both chambers of Congress and the White House.
“We need to make sure service members, veterans, and their families have the financial support they need and deserve,” said Cornyn. “I’m grateful to President Trump for his unwavering support of our brave men and women in uniform and for signing this bill into law, which will help ensure the Veterans Affairs Department can offer competitive life insurance packages that keep pace with the current cost of living.”
Strickland first introduced the bill in 2023 during the 118th Congress. It passed the House with bipartisan support and was reintroduced in the 119th Congress alongside Representative Keith Self of Texas and Senators Cornyn, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Angus King of Maine. The Senate passed the legislation before it was signed into law by the President on December 12, 2025.
