The Mount Zion Baptist Church Women’s Ministry is inviting the community to a delicious breakfast and an inspiring morning of prayer and praise this Sat., Jan. 25, at 9:00 a.m. in their Fellowship Hall, as part of their 83rd Anniversary Women’s Celebration.
Rev. Dr. Julie Vaughn, President of The Mount Zion Baptist Church Women’s Ministry, says this year’s theme, “Unlocking Your Potential,” will focus on the Scriptures Ephesians 2:10 and Philippians 4:13.
Sister Kimberly Garrett will serve as the Mistress of Ceremonies. The program features Sister Heather Harris, Mount Zion, praise dance; Sister Sandra Williams, First A.M.E., prayer; Sister Nicole Elskridge of New Birth Ministries, soloist; and others.
The keynote address will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Kathryn Jones Grier of First A.M.E. Church. A Seattle native, Dr. Grier brings decades of experience and a wealth of knowledge to this year’s event.
Dr. Grier holds a B.A. in Music from Seattle University, with a concentration in Voice and Accompaniment. After relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, she built an illustrious career as a musician, directing choral groups, conducting music workshops, and teaching piano and voice for more than three decades. She has served as President of the music division of the Hampton University Ministers and Musicians Guild and is a member of the National Music Teachers Association.
Her academic achievements include a Master of Divinity from Eastern Theological Seminary, an M.Ed. in Criminal Justice/Counseling from Coppin State University, and a Doctorate of Sacred Music from Virginia Seminary and College (Lynchburg University). In addition to her work as a teacher and musician, Dr. Grier has contributed to her community through roles such as Chaplain for the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and as an active participant in the Ministers Council of the American Baptist Churches of the South.
Ordained in 2006 at Sharon Baptist Church in Baltimore, Dr. Grier’s favorite scripture, Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” — perfectly aligns with the breakfast’s theme of potential and empowerment. She resides in Shoreline, Washington, with her husband and has three children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The Prayer Breakfast, started over 20 years ago by Sister Elma Horton, was created to unite the community and begin the year with powerful prayers. This year, Deacon Lois Harris and Deacon Dorothy Mungin are co-chairing the breakfast. Celebration Co-Chairs Sister Colleen Walls and Sister Rhonda Staton encourage everyone to attend not only the breakfast but also the other events of the 83rd Women’s Ministry Celebration.
