In the early hours of last Thursday morning, a devastating fire engulfed a Seattle shelter made up of 25 tiny homes, leaving 28 individuals displaced. The Seattle Fire Department successfully extinguished the flames, but the impact on the residents and the community is substantial.
Although the flames also damaged a larger structure that served as a shelter, authorities have determined it safe for residents to return. Nevertheless, the loss of the tiny homes has added to the already challenging circumstances faced by those affected.
The Catholic Community Services Bridge, which housed the tiny home village, had become a safe haven for individuals experiencing homelessness. However, the fire destroyed 25 of the tiny home shelters, causing immediate displacement for the residents. Witness accounts indicate that the fire spread rapidly throughout the village, leaving little time for escape.
Law enforcement detained a suspect for questioning in connection with the fire. The individual, who was scheduled to appear in court on Friday, July 19, chose to waive their right to appear. The court found probable cause for reckless burning and set bail at $20,000. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, with authorities working diligently to determine what led to this devastating incident.
Efforts are underway to provide support and assistance to the displaced individuals. The Red Cross, King County, and the Catholic charity responsible for the village are collaborating to help find alternative shelter for those affected. Approximately 20 people have already been connected with new housing options, and it is expected that the remaining individuals will be connected by the end of the day.
