Should Public Schools Have A Police Presence Inside The Schools?

Mook:
“I work for Community Passageways, which is CVI work—community violence intervention. And this actual incident happened on the day that we were at a gun violence conference. So, I think that having CVI work—community violence intervention—would allow us to have less police presence. But do I think we can do without it? No. I think with the state of gun violence that we should have some. I don’t think it should be an overwhelming presence, because I feel like a police presence can be intimidating. But with the amount of gun violence that is happening in and around our communities and in and around the schools and our children—absolutely.”
Brandon:
“No. I think that a community presence is needed—someone that can connect to these young people doesn’t need to be in a uniform. Someone from the community that understands what they’re going through. I think they need that presence inside the school, but no to a police presence.”
Victoria:
“I do think we should have police, especially if our kids that look like me are living in the community where they’re dying. If that’s what makes them safe, yes.”
Lonnisha:
“I believe that police should be in the schools. As a mother of a slain 16-year-old, I just feel like it would protect our living babies.”
Marcella:
“Do I think Seattle Police should be in the schools? Absolutely. For this time and this age, we need to keep our babies safe, and we need a better future.”
Chris:
“I absolutely agree that they should have a presence in the Seattle Public Schools at this point, because it’s hard to be a kid right now, from my observation. Kids are getting killed, kids are getting shot at schools. There’s a lot of violence that is there, and I think that in order to deter that, they’re going to either have to have a presence with police actively there or implement, maybe, metal detectors. It’s gotten to that point. It wasn’t like that when I was in high school, but at this point, it’s on the news every other week. So, I just think that we’ve got to do something to try to deter these kids from being so violent with one another.”
