Seattle’s newly established Community Crisis Assistance and Response for Everyone (CARE) department has been making significant strides in providing crucial support to those in need. Since its launch at the end of October, the CARE department’s six community crisis workers have responded to an impressive 306 events.
Operating daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Seattle’s CARE department ensures that there are always “Community Crisis Responders” available to assist individuals facing health crises or those requiring connection to essential services. Working in pairs, the team of six responders has been actively engaged in providing aid to the community.
With a median response time of 28 minutes, the CARE responders waste no time in addressing the needs of those in crisis. In fact, in 36% of the events they have responded to, they have gone above and beyond by transporting individuals to shelters, detox centers, or other locations where they can receive the necessary help they require.
Collaboration with the Seattle Police Department is a vital aspect of the CARE department’s operations. Whether dispatched with the police or called upon by the Seattle police to assist or take charge, the CARE responders work hand in hand with law enforcement to ensure a comprehensive response to community crises.
Moreover, the CARE responders are not solely reliant on dispatch calls. They also proactively respond to “on-view” situations, where they either witness an incident or individuals approach them seeking assistance while on patrol. Approximately 10% of the events they respond to fall under this category, showcasing the proactivity and dedication of the CARE team.
Seattle’s new CARE department has shown immense promise and effectiveness in its mission to provide aid to those in need. With their swift response times, compassionate approach, and commitment to connecting individuals with essential services, the CARE responders are making a tangible difference in the community. As they continue to serve the city of Seattle, their impact will undoubtedly be felt by many more individuals in crisis.
