Man Arrested in Connection with Assault That Closed U.S. 2 in Sultan

Snohomish County deputies apprehended a suspect in King County linked to an assault that led to the closure of U.S. 2 in Sultan last week on Wednesday. The incident unfolded around 1:47 p.m. when deputies were called to Barmon Lumber Inc., located at 33109 U.S. 2, following reports of a man with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, they discovered a man who had sustained a leg injury from a gunshot.

According to a social media update from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, the assailant fled the scene. The victim informed deputies that he was sitting in his Sultan home with the front door open when the 27-year-old suspect entered, wearing a mask and brandishing a firearm. The suspect reportedly demanded that both individuals in the living room leave the premises.

When they did not comply, the suspect allegedly struck the victim with the gun before shooting him in the leg. A struggle ensued over the weapon, during which the suspect managed to escape and struck the victim again. The victim then fled to Barmon Lumber Inc., which is situated west of his residence.

The victim stated to law enforcement that he had never met the assailant before, although they had a mutual acquaintance. In response to the situation, authorities closed both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 2 from Sultan Basin Road to the roundabout near 339th Avenue Southeast while the investigation was underway. First responders transported the victim to EvergreenHealth Monroe for treatment of the gunshot wound and two lacerations to his head.

During the investigation, deputies discovered a woman hiding in the bushes along the eastern fence line. She explained to the officers that she had been sleeping on the couch during the assault and sought refuge in the bushes out of fear.

Around 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, deputies arrested the suspect at 420 Sunset Boulevard in Renton. He was booked into Snohomish County Jail on charges including two counts of assault, burglary, and unlawful possession of a firearm. A background check revealed that the suspect had a history of multiple felonies in Texas and was a convicted felon for unauthorized possession of a stolen vehicle.
