Urban Games 2019 To Focus On Fighting Childhood Obesity Through Fun And Healthy Wellness Activities

Urban Games, a free& fun, health, play and wellness program for urban youth ages 5 – 22, will host their annual event on Sat., June 29 from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm at the Garfield Community Center – 2323 E. Cherry St. in Seattle.

The event, which promises to be an entertaining afternoon designed to engage young people about their health and community, will featuring CPR trainings, health and dental screenings, athletic physicals, indoor/outdoor Olympic-style games, open swim lessons at Medgar Evers Pool, fitness workshops, performances by local artists, authors, and special guests, free helmet fittings, face painting, a bouncy house, and more!

According to organizers, in order to increase physical activity, children need spaces and programs with activities that are exciting and challenging enough to keep them entirely engaged. That’s why free community health and fitness events and programs like Urban Gamesare needed in our communities.

Urban Games recognizes that our future generation must be invested into to excel in this world. Children need to be active for at least 60 minutes every day periodically to grow into a healthy weight. Physical activity is a vital element of a healthy lifestyle. However, healthy eating must be included to aid in preventing several diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, which plague African American and Hispanic communities.

“This program provides a fun environment focused on youth and their families to learn about living an active, healthy lifestyle, including video gaming,” said Urban Games Founder, Chief Visionary, and Board Chair Benita Thomas. “We bring together invaluable sports, health, wellness, and play resources in one central place for the benefit of the entire community. The main focus of Urban Games is to combat childhood obesity, as well as the risks and prevention measures associated with this growing trend, particularly for African Americans. Focusing on the development of the whole person, Urban Games 2019 believes everyone should have access to community resources and programs that build awareness around health, play, and wellness.”

In 2018, Urban Games had over 1,000 community participants at their event. This year, they plan to have an even bigger and better event.
