Verity Credit Union Distributes $53,000 In Community Aid Amid Shutdown And Holiday Pressures

In response to the financial strain caused by the recent federal government shutdown and seasonal pressures, Verity Credit Union provided $53,000 in direct financial assistance to more than 212 individuals across the region in November. The relief was distributed through the credit union’s Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) grant program during its Community Care Activation events.

The events offered one-on-one financial check-ins, support services, and on-the-spot resources to individuals and families facing economic uncertainty. Verity staff completed over 212 personalized financial check-ins, resulting in 54 new memberships, including 40 at the Auburn branch and 14 at Beacon Hill. Two loan applications were also initiated at the Auburn location.

Outreach for the events relied heavily on social media, nonprofit referrals, and word-of-mouth at community gatherings, reflecting the strength of grassroots communication in mobilizing local support.

Ziquora Banks, Chief Impact Strategy Officer at Verity Credit Union, said the importance of offering responsive, compassionate financial support during difficult times cannot be overstated.

“In the wake of the shutdown, so many families in our region were carrying stress that no one should have to shoulder alone,” said Banks. “Our goal in providing this $53,000 in aid was to offer a moment of stability and dignity.”

Black-owned businesses in the Seattle area continue to face significant challenges when government operations are interrupted. Shutdowns can delay or suspend access to federal contracts and grant funding, disrupt supply chains, and reduce community spending due to furloughs and job uncertainty. These conditions can increase competition and limit growth opportunities for businesses already operating within systemic economic disparities.

The impact of the events was evident in stories shared by community members. One longtime Beacon Hill member, with over 50 years of membership and a career spanning the FBI, Department of Education, and IRS, expressed pride in Verity’s commitment to community support during unstable times. Another member, with nearly 30 years of membership, said a pre-event financial check-in provided hope and clarity amid significant financial stress.

These community experiences reflect Verity’s broader mission to promote financial well-being and solidarity. The Community Care Activation events were designed not only to provide direct aid but to deepen trust and strengthen resilience in the face of economic disruption.

Banks said the organization remains committed to supporting members and the community at large.

“Delivered with the same care, intention, and community-centered spirit that guides all of our work,” said Banks. “Even in moments of disruption, people deserve to feel seen, supported, and reminded that their community is standing with them.”
