YouthCare and Urban ArtWorks have partnered to create a 90-foot youth-led mural at the corner of Broadway and Pine. The mural, situated at the future site of YouthCare’s Constellation Center, was collaboratively developed by Urban ArtWorks’ Mural Apprentice and Base Crew Programs, engaging young participants in the creation of public art.
The mural, which took eight weeks to complete, was planned, conceptualized, and painted by the program’s young artists, working alongside Urban ArtWorks Teaching Artists. A special unveiling event was held at the West Hall room, provided by Century Ballroom, where attendees had the opportunity to hear from YouthCare and Urban ArtWorks leadership, as well as the mural artists. Following the event, attendees had a chance to explore the mural up close and interact with the artists.
Amanda Hashagen, Executive Director at Urban ArtWorks, expressed gratitude for the partnership with YouthCare and Community Roots Housing, recognizing the organizations’ dedication to the safety, housing, and growth opportunities for young people.
“We are grateful to partner with YouthCare and Community Roots Housing who do such important work to keep our young people safe, housed, and engaged in growth opportunities,” said Hashagen. “These Capitol Hill murals represent the power of community. It shows what can happen when individuals, and organizations, come together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. It serves as a reminder that when we unite, we can bring about positive change and nurture an environment where everyone can thrive.”
Christopher Persons, CEO of Community Roots Housing, emphasized the significance of a vibrant neighborhood art scene in provoking conversation and engaging the public.
“This mural represents the immense creativity of our community’s young people and serves as a herald of Community Roots and YouthCare’s exciting forthcoming project,” said Persons.
YouthCare, a recent addition to the Capitol Hill neighborhood, is delighted to provide a platform for youth art and creative expression in a highly visible public space. The organization views the mural as a reflection of its future plans for the site.
“We could not think of a better way to celebrate all that is to come on this site than by having the young people of our community paint their creative vision onto the corner that will house new pathways and new supportive connections for youth,” said Degale Cooper, CEO of YouthCare. “We are honored to partner with Urban ArtWorks and their team who work powerfully to elevate youth art and nurture the creative drive of young people. These murals are for all of us in Capitol Hill and are a testament to the passion we hold for our neighborhood and what we can collectively bring to it.”
The 90-foot mural stands as a striking testament to the collaborative efforts of YouthCare and Urban ArtWorks, showcasing the importance of community engagement and artistic expression in fostering positive change and creating a vibrant environment for all.
