Seattle To Pay $500,000 To Settle CHOP Shooting Death

The City of Seattle has agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit filed on behalf of the father of 19-year-old Lorenzo Anderson. Lorenzo was shot and killed on June 20, 2020, during the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP).  The East Precinct in Capitol Hill was abandoned by Seattle Police on June 8.

Horace Anderson sued former Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, Council Member Kshama Sawant and the City of Seattle in a wrongful death lawsuit. His suit claims that the city and leaders allowed a dangerous environment to thrive and that first responders “couldn’t or wouldn’t” enter the CHOP zone after Lorenzo was shot which cost Lorenzo his life.

The lawyers representing the victim said the lawsuit was not about money. It is about justice and making sure the City of Seattle does the right thing. The man that is accused of shooting and killing Lorenzo is in custody.

Another lawsuit was filed related to this story. A civil rights lawsuit was filed against the City by Lorenzo’s mother but it was dismissed by a federal judge back in November. Attorney Mark Lindquist said Sinclair is still hurting from the loss of her son and doesn’t feel like the $500,000 settlement represents the City of Seattle or that leaders are accountable for what happened.
