Black UW Police Trial To Begin In Lawsuit Alleging Racism

In a significant stride towards combating racism within law enforcement, a group of Black police officers from the University of Washington (UW) is preparing to embark on a legal battle that holds profound implications for the fight against racial discrimination in the workplace. The lawsuit, set to go to trial, has become a focal point in the broader conversation about systemic racism and the pursuit of equality and justice. Jury selection begins this week.

The trial is scheduled to last into December, with more than 80 witnesses. The lawsuit, filed by Black UW police officers, alleges racial discrimination, harassment, and a hostile work environment within the university’s police department. The officers contend that they faced systemic racism, including unfair treatment, racial slurs, and discriminatory practices, which not only affected their professional growth but also their personal well-being.

The officers are identified in the lawsuit as Russell Ellis Jr., Gabriel Golden, Hamani Nowlen, Damien Taylor, and Karinn Young – the only female and a 12-year veteran.

The lawsuit identified the accused offending officers only by an assigned initial “in an effort to reduce the likelihood of retaliation against them.” This case is not just about the experiences of a few individuals; it symbolizes a larger struggle against racial discrimination that the lawsuit alleges the UW administration knew about and the issues have been going on for years

The 33-page complaint details more than 100 separate incidents of “rampant, pervasive discrimination and retaliation”. The department’s Black officers allegedly were subjected to crude comments about Black male anatomy. The University of Washington denies the allegations stating, “There is no doubt that plaintiff’s allegations are disturbing — if true. But those whom the plaintiffs accuse of engaging in or witnessing such conduct have credibly denied these allegations under oath, and will do so at trial.”
