David Hackney Announces Campaign For 11th Legislative District State Representative

Attorney and Community Advocate David Hackney recently announced his campaign for 11th Legislative District State Representative, Pos 1. The 11th Legislative District covers Georgetown and other parts of South Seattle, Tukwila, Renton, and Kent. The seat is currently held by Representative Zach Hudgins.

“I am running for State Representative in the 11th Legislative District because we need a change,” says Hackney. “I understand the urgent need to protect the economic rights, civil rights and human rights of the citizens of the 11th LD, and I have the life experience and advocacy skills needed to make it happen.”

Hackney was born into a Union family and despite limited resources, they prioritized education and made sure that Hackney would be able to succeed in school. During his senior year of college, Hackney’s family experienced a healthcare crisis. His mother was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer, causing the family a severe hardship that crippled them financially. These experiences have shaped a desire to see a government that is responsive to the needs of its constituents and led him to make the decision to dedicate his life to giving back to the community.

Hackney began his legal career as an Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice, where he tried more than 20 criminal jury trials including homicide, narcotics, fraud, tax, and bank robbery cases. He also took a one-year leave of absence from the Department of Justice to join the United Nations on a trial team at the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, in The Hague, Netherlands, where he convicted a detention camp commander of crimes against humanity. Hackney also served as the Senior Counsel for Global Human Resources at The Nature Conservancy, the largest Non-Profit organization in the world dedicated to preserving the environment. In 2018 Hackney joined the Boards of Tabor 100 and the Alliance for Gun Responsibility Foundation, and in 2019 Governor Inslee appointed him as a Commissioner on the Washington Human Rights Commission.

Hackney is a graduate of Cornell, and received his Law Degree and Masters of Public Administration from Harvard University.
