Distinguished Military Veteran, Edvine M. Evans, Passes At 83

Edvine M. Evans, age 83, of Olympia, Washington passed away on Mon., Aug. 14. Evans was born in Detroit, Michigan. She was a longtime resident of Olympia. She was the beloved wife of the late Herbert Evans. She was the daughter of the late William and Minnie Bell Mansfield and the sister of the late James Mansfield.

Evans had a distinguished 27-year military career, achieving the highest U.S. Army enlisted rank of Sergeant Major. She was among the first Black women to achieve this rank. The highest U.S. Army enlisted ranking achievement that very few soldiers, particularly, Africa American women accomplished. She received numerous awards for service and achievement. She retired from a second career as a state employee with Washington State Employment Security Department. Evans was an avid sports fan, a world traveler and had a genuine love for people. She was a foundering member of The Northwest RV Travelers club and very active with the National Africa American RV Association Club and the local Buffalo Soldiers chapter.

Evans is survived by two nieces Michelle Boxly and Belinda Price and one nephew Wendell Mansfield. She is also survived by one grandniece Monique Mansfield; two grandnephews, Jamar Morgan and Maurice Mansfield. A large host of local extended families and friends.

Viewing will be held on Thurs., August 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mills and Mills Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 5725 Littlerock Road SW, Tumwater, Washington, 98512.
