Dr. John H. Vassall Receives National Award From The American College Of Physicians

PHILADELPHIA – John H. Vassall II, MD, FACIP, has been awarded the Steven E. Weinberger Award for Physician Executives/Leaders by the American College of Physicians (ACP), a national organization of internists.

Established in 2015, this award is bestowed upon a physician executive or leader of a national or international medical organization for distinguished contributions to internal medicine or significant impact on improving health care and/or medical education beyond a single institution or health system. The physician executive/leader is an employee not serving in an elected position.

Dr. Vassall, an internal medicine physician in Seattle, Washington, serves as Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical Education at the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine – Everett. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Washington. Dr. Vassall served as Division Chief of General Medicine, Associate Medical Director for Managed Care, and President of the Minor and James Medical Group. He was medical staff President of Providence Seattle Medical Center and served as Chief of Staff and later Chief Medical Officer of Swedish Health Services, the largest health system in Washington State.

Throughout his career, Dr. Vassall has been active in local, regional, and national professional and community organizations. He served 15 years as Vice-Speaker and Speaker of the House of Delegates for the Washington State Medical Association and as a trustee for 30 years. He also served as a delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates, a trustee of the Washington State Hospital Association, trustee of the American Hospice Association, and trustee of the Washington State Association of Black Professionals in Health Care.

In 2006, Dr. Vassall was voted Washington State Internist of the Year by the Washington chapter of the American College of Physicians, and in 2021 received its Laureate Award. This year the chapter inaugurated the John Vassall, MD, FACP Annual Lecture for Justice and Equity in Medicine.
