Driver Launched Off Ship Canal Bridge Killed In Crash

A driver who was tragically launched off the Ship Canal Bridge was killed.

A driver who was tragically launched off the Ship Canal Bridge was killed. Prosecutors said Jordan Shelley, 23, was killed when another driver crashed into Shelley’s disabled vehicle. This sent Shelley off the Ship Canal Bridge and into Lake Union. As a result, a Seattle man has been charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving after allegedly drinking alcohol and causing the crash.

Charges we’re filed by the King County Prosecutor’s Office last Thursday against Justin Yang Kuo. The crash happened last Tuesday around 4:30 a.m. Jordan M. Shelley was on his way to work when he had car problems. The victim called his girlfriend to ask her for help. He was pulled over onto the shoulder of I-5.

Kuo was traveling south when he allegedly struck Shelley’s vehicle. The 22 year old first told police he was traveling 65 to 70 miles per hour before the crash. Shelley was outside his car when the crash happened. Shelley was hit where his body was then hurled over the guard railing. He fell 180 feet into Lake Union.

Jordan, the victim, was on his way to work as an EMT when he was killed. A dive team with the Seattle Police Department searched for Shelley under the bridge. His body was found about 25 to 30 feet under the water.

Prosecutors said Shelley is believed to have died in the crash based on the wounds on the body. Kuo told a Washington State Patrol trooper that the car in front of him moved to the left suddenly. Kuo said he looked down to adjust the radio and crashed into Shelley’s vehicle. A trooper said Kuo appeared to be impaired. Allegedly, Kuo later told police that he had three to four Mike’s Hard Lemonades before the crash. According to probable cause documents, Kuo’s breathalyzer test at the scene was above the legal limit of 0.08.
