El Centro De La Raza will host a community meeting on the results of the UW Study on air and noise pollution this Sat., Feb. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Centilia Cultural Center, 1660 S Roberto Maestas Festival St in Seattle.
Beacon Hill is majority minority neighborhood with significant immigrant and refugee populations. It is surrounded by air and noise emissions from land (I-5, I-90, Rainier and Dr. MLK Way) with airplanes (Sea-Tac, Boeing Field, King County Int’l Airport) that fly over the neighborhood every 90 seconds on the average.
The City of Seattle funded UW Study was prompted by three Beacon Hill community projects that observed noise levels registering from 70 to 90 decibels, well above the 55 during the day and 45 decibel standard.
The UW Study’s primary researchers, Dr. Edmund Seto and Dr. Tim Larson, will present the results at 11 a.m. followed at noon with free lunch and community discussion on what to do next. Dr. Seto is an Associate Professor from the UW College of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, and Dr. Larson is a full professor from the UW College of Civil & Environmental.
Beacon Hill community members are highly concerned with the health impacts of the current air and noise pollution given Sea-Tac International Airport’s planned expansion to accommodate the doubling of international flights, the tripling of air cargo, and increase of passengers from 47 to 66 million passengers brought about by regional growth.
