
Business owners owners of near 3rd and Pike, say they see criminal activity every day just right outside their businesses. This has caused shops to close early as well as pursue other ideas of safety. The crimes have been violent. There are also drug use and thefts.
A fatal shooting happened on Sunday down the street where a video shows people running. Another local man was shot in the face nearby.
The Mayor ran on a tough on Crimes platform. Business owners thought that area of downtown would be hotspot #1 to be addressed. A business owner told the media that he had high expectations from the mayor who has yet to deliver on his campaign promise.
The economy as well as the realities caused by COVID has been touted as the main causes on the spike in criminal activity across the country. The areas in Seattle that are regular high in crime are also experiencing even higher activity. The 12th and Jackson area is one of those areas. However, that area received police focus and was cleared a couple of weeks ago.
Business owners in the Pike area has been communicating with the mayor about it’s plan to start in their location. When asked by the media, the office stated, “Replicating promising early results from 12th and Jackson requires concentrated effort to show noticeable improvement in the short term and a comprehensive approach in the long term”
Many know that when one area is cleared, crime pops up in another area. Criminals usually know to go elsewhere when they see mobile police units.
