Former Seahawk gets more jail time when cops smell alcohol

Received by Newsfinder from APJul 23, 2005 20:05 Eastern Time KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) _ Former Seahawks receiver Koren Robinson wound up spending a little more time in jail than had been ordered after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. Robinson, 25, struck a plea bargain with prosecutors Monday, pleading guilty to DUI. Prosecutors dropped a May 6 reckless driving charge and recommended a judge suspend all but one day of his 365-day jail term. Kirkland Municipal Judge Albert Raines agreed, and ordered Robinson not to touch alcohol while on probation. But when Robinson reported to the Kirkland city jail on Wednesday, two officers said they could smell alcohol on his breath. Kirkland police booked Robinson for investigation of violating terms of his probation. He was released early Friday afternoon, held past the 24 hours for alcohol consumption, on a judge’s orders, Sgt Robert Balkema said Saturday from the jail. His attorney, Jon Scott Fox of Bellevue, said Robinson is scheduled to appear in Kirkland Municipal Court on Aug. 4, when a judge will determine whether there is evidence of a probation violation. “He’s denied the allegation,” Fox said Friday of the contention Robinson had been drinking. If the judge finds that Robinson violated his probation, he could re-sentence him to serve up to 364 days in jail. The former Seahawk also was barred from driving for 90 days, fined $2,137 and required to use an ignition interlock device for one year. Robinson served a four-game NFL suspension for substance abuse last season. He sought treatment for alcohol abuse earlier this year and completed it in time to participate in the Seahawks’ post-draft minicamp in April. Robinson was the ninth overall pick of the Seahawks in the 2001 draft. His best season was 2002, when he had 78 receptions for 1,240 yards, the only Seattle receiver other than Hall of Famer Steve Largent to record a 1,200-yard season. His production subsequently declined, with 39 receptions for 536 yards in 2003 and 31 receptions for 495 yards last season. He was released by the team on June 2. Robinson is expected to earn $1.35 million this year from the team.
