For generations, Garfield and Franklin have battled for neighborhood bragging rights in one of Seattle’s longstanding inner-city high school rivalries, a matchup rooted in the Central Area-South End rivalry between the two schools. On Saturday, the Bulldogs and Quakers renewed that tradition in the “Hood Bowl,” and this year’s matchup lived up to the rivalry.
Franklin held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback by Garfield to escape with a 20-18 victory at Rainier Beach High School in a game that wasn’t decided until the final minute. After Bryan Hurd’s 70-yard touchdown run pulled the Bulldogs within two points with 1:37 remaining, Garfield recovered the ensuing onside kick and had an opportunity to complete the comeback before Franklin recovered a late fumble to finally put the game away.
The intensity was evident from the opening possession as Franklin’s defense immediately put pressure on Garfield. The Bulldogs started backed up at their own 10-yard line, and the Quakers forced an 8-yard loss before Garfield quarterback Josiah Montgomery-Irving threw two incomplete passes. A Franklin penalty kept the drive alive, but the Quakers eventually came up with the game’s first turnover when Larian Bankhead intercepted Montgomery-Irving, giving Franklin possession at the Garfield 29.
After Franklin was pushed back four yards, a personal foul against Garfield helped move the Quakers into the red zone. Bankhead then finished the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run, and the extra point gave Franklin an early 7-0 lead.
Garfield responded with a 24-yard run by Amir Codrington, but three straight incomplete passes forced the Bulldogs to punt.
Franklin appeared poised to add to its lead when Davion Frazier broke loose for a 27-yard run, but the drive came to an abrupt end when the Quakers fumbled near the end zone and Garfield recovered. The Bulldogs couldn’t turn the takeaway into points and were forced to punt, but Franklin gave them another opportunity moments later, turning the ball over again and giving Garfield possession at the Quakers’ 44-yard line.
This time, the Bulldogs took advantage.
Jason McIntosh ripped off a 15-yard run before Montgomery-Irving connected with Porter Rohde for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Franklin blocked the extra-point attempt, preserving a 7-6 lead late in the first quarter.
Franklin’s special teams provided another spark in the second quarter. After Garfield was forced to punt, Corde Frazier broke loose for a 70-yard punt-return touchdown. The extra point was no good, but the return extended the Quakers’ lead to 13-6 with 7:53 remaining in the half.
Garfield answered with a big special-teams play of its own as Rohde’s long punt return put the Bulldogs inside Franklin territory. Montgomery-Irving added a 3-yard run before Hurd broke through for a 12-yard touchdown, cutting Franklin’s lead to 13-12. Once again, however, the Quakers denied Garfield the extra point, as Corde Frazier blocked the kick to preserve the one-point advantage.
Franklin then put together its most sustained drive of the half. Davion Frazier connected with Tyrique Galloway for a 35-yard completion to move the Quakers deep into Garfield territory, and Franklin continued to grind out yards behind Henry Moore, Corde Frazier and Davion Frazier.
Facing fourth-and-6 from the Garfield 31, Davion Frazier kept the drive alive with a 9-yard run before eventually powering into the end zone from the 1-yard line. The extra point extended Franklin’s lead to 20-12 with 1:35 remaining in the half.
Garfield tried to answer before halftime, but its drive stalled after a completion to Codrington, an incompletion and a sack by Moore. Franklin got one more possession, but Davion Frazier’s pass was intercepted by Rohde, sending the teams into halftime with the Quakers holding a 20-12 advantage.
After an action-filled first half, the defenses took control in the third quarter.
Franklin moved the ball early behind Moore, who broke off a 9-yard run, but penalties repeatedly stalled the Quakers’ drive and eventually forced a punt. Garfield responded with a steady possession featuring runs by Codrington, Hurd and Montgomery-Irving. Montgomery-Irving kept the drive alive with a fourth-down run, but Franklin eventually stopped him short on another fourth-down attempt to end the threat.
Franklin again found some success on the ground during its next possession, highlighted by a 12-yard run from Moore, but penalties proved costly. A holding call and a personal foul helped derail the drive and forced another punt.
Garfield couldn’t capitalize, as Franklin’s defense came up with a sack to end another Bulldogs possession. Neither team scored during the quarter, leaving the Quakers ahead 20-12 heading into the fourth.
Franklin entered the final quarter trying to protect its eight-point lead and leaned heavily on its rushing attack to control the clock. After forcing Garfield to punt, the Quakers put together a long drive highlighted by a 14-yard run from Davion Frazier and steady gains from Corde Frazier and Moore.
Franklin moved all the way to the Garfield 20, where Moore appeared to score a touchdown that could have given the Quakers some breathing room. But a holding penalty erased the score, and although Franklin continued to grind away at the clock, Garfield’s defense eventually stopped the Quakers on fourth down at the 17-yard line with two minutes remaining.
The game was far from over.
On Garfield’s very next play, Hurd changed the complexion of the game, breaking free for a 70-yard touchdown run to pull the Bulldogs within 20-18 with 1:37 remaining. The explosive run capped a big night for Hurd, who finished with 89 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just three carries.
Garfield appeared to convert the ensuing two-point attempt, but a holding penalty wiped it out. Montgomery-Irving’s next pass fell incomplete, leaving Franklin clinging to a two-point lead.
Then the Bulldogs gave themselves one more chance.
Garfield recovered the ensuing onside kick, putting the fans in the stands on their feet and giving the Bulldogs an opportunity to complete the comeback. Montgomery-Irving gained five yards on the ground and later connected with Hurd for three yards as Garfield tried to move into position to take the lead.
With less than a minute remaining and Garfield out of timeouts, the pressure intensified. But on third-and-15 from the Franklin 43-yard line, Garfield fumbled and Franklin recovered, finally ending the Bulldogs’ comeback bid and allowing the Quakers to escape with a 20-18 Hood Bowl victory.
The final numbers reflected just how closely the longtime rivals battled throughout the afternoon. Franklin finished with 235 yards of total offense, while Garfield recorded 234, a difference of just one yard in a game ultimately decided by two points.
After the game, Franklin head coach Terry Green said he was happy to see the rivalry between the Quakers and Bulldogs renewed.
“It was a hard fought game. I am most proud of, and excited about the rivalry being back,” said Green. “We played a very sloppy game with so many selfish penalties, but a win is a win.”
