Do You Think That The Increase In Access And Acceptance To Sports Gambling Is Impacting College And Pro Level Sports?

Simon:
“Yes. It is getting people into unnecessary trouble.”
Alan:
“I think it could be a potential problem for collegiate sports because there’s now a profit motive with the college athletes being paid, or athletes that aren’t being paid much, and I think that creates a sense that, ‘Oh, I could earn more money by doing this outside thing.’ I also think that gambling has proliferated so much because of the fact that the NBA is now like an entertainment company as opposed to a sports company. So, the legal obligations to fairness and all that are different. And so, I think, in college, they still have that in place, so it’s maybe a better safeguard. But I still think that the profit that the athletes are being paid might create that urge in other students that they should probably try to cash in as well.”
Mckenzie:
“I think that it is making gambling more normalized, and it is going to influence more and more people to do it in our society and the community, which I think is going to be a problem.”
Allen:
“Sports betting is a problem for collegiate sports and professional sports. Reason being, I feel like with a lot of the times you see fans come to the games and kind of chirp at the professional athletes, and I feel like it kind of hurts their game and the fun of the game. It hurts them because they are going to games to try and make money off of it, instead of enjoying the game. I feel like with the players, now that they’re in that situation and they can control whether they play good or badly, they start to bet on themselves, or they start to bet on the people they know. So, I do feel like it’s bad for us, because you can end up getting either fined or arrested, and it is just bad for sports culture.”
Miss:
“I would say that gambling could create the wrong motivation for young athletes to participate and engage, feeling more pressure to perform rather than just enjoying the talent that they have and the game they engage in.”
Martha:
“It looks like betting or gambling, and it’s not a good thing, particularly when it comes to those NBA players. I believe that no matter what charges they may face, I just believe their inner spirit will get them on the right track at the end of the day. So, whatever happens, I’m a believer that goodness will come out in the end.”
