The Garfield Bulldogs (5-4) hosted the Evergreen Plainsmen (5-5) of Vancouver, Washington in a loser-out, playoff seeding matchup Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Bulldogs offensive game plan, which was clicking on all cylinders, gave the Bulldogs an early 7-0 lead with 64-yard catch and run touchdown connection by senior wide receiver Leon Neal from quarterback Javon Tade.
Early on the Bulldogs’ defensive intensity proved to be troublesome for the Plainsmen. A series of three plays and out became the theme of Evergreens offense moving towards the latter minutes of the first quarter. With 3:40 remaining in the quarter, Tade was able to find Bulldog receiver Vatrevyon Garner in the corner of the end zone for 6 points, putting the Bulldogs up 14-0, after a successful extra-point attempt, and looking to establish dominance on both sides of the ball.
As the second quarter began, the Plainsmen inserted senior running back Zyell Griffin, who provided two exceptional touchdown runs from 24 yards and 22 yards respectively, knotting the score at 14-14 with 6:44 remain in the half. A 21-21 halftime score set things up for an exciting second half of football.
The second half of football provided fireworks from both teams down the stretch as
the Bulldogs held a narrow lead 36-34 with 2:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs were able to stand strong defensively and come away with a huge playoff win under first year head coach Reggie Witherspoon, 36-34 final.
Garfield quarterback Javon Tade completed 8 of 13 passes for 117 yards, while Leon Neal contributed with 123 all-purpose yards to help give the Garfield Bulldogs victory.
