A 6-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Seattle on Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred at the crosswalk located at Rainier Avenue South and South Charles Street around 11:50 a.m.
According to Seattle police, detectives are currently investigating the collision. The girl was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition. “This corner has seen too many issues before. Drivers often don’t pay attention,” remarked Oscar Perez, who was waiting at a nearby bus stop shortly after the accident. “It’s unfortunate that safety on the roads isn’t prioritized.”
Witnesses and investigators reported that a woman was driving north on Rainier Avenue in the curbside lane when she failed to notice that the traffic light had turned red. While vehicles in adjacent lanes stopped, she continued driving. The child, walking with her mother, stepped off the curb to cross the street and was struck, resulting in her being thrown across the intersection. Initial assessments indicated she had no pulse, prompting bystanders to start CPR before she was transported to the hospital.
At the time of the incident, a construction project was in progress, with cones and equipment obstructing some lanes. Preliminary details suggest that the driver may have been disoriented by the construction and inadvertently hit the girl in the crosswalk. A field sobriety test was conducted, revealing no signs of impairment in the driver. No arrests have been made.
Following a medical evaluation, it was confirmed that the girl sustained no broken bones or serious injuries from the accident. Harborview Medical Center has since upgraded her condition to satisfactory.
